An attractive highly inlaid Federal mahogany sideboard, New York City, circa 1800.

This handsome sideboard has wonderful pattern and string inlay throughout, together with the finest vibrant mahogany veneers. The exuberant use of these high quality materials epitomizes the finest Hepplewhite furniture being produced in Federal New York. The “D” shaped sideboard has a stepped front and a richly grained conforming mahogany top with a line inlaid and cross-grained edge. The case has a long central drawer above a pair of cabinet doors flanked by a pair of bowed cabinet doors and drawers. Each of the drawers and cabinets have diagonal cross-grained borders around a line inlaid panel with ovolo corners, framing a vibrant mahogany panel. The sideboard rests on square tapered legs with lavish line and pattern inlays. The legs have three segmented inlays. At the top of the leg is a striped oval panel above an icicle pattern inlay and at the base is a graduated bellflower inlay. The legs terminate with inlaid cuffs. The pressed oval brass drawer pulls appear to be original.
