An important eglomisé patent timepiece with thermometer, attributed to Aaron Willard Jr., circa 1815.
This important patent timepiece, which has wonderful old surface and superb reverse painted glasses, is fitted with a thermometer in the throat panel. The very desirable additional feature of a thermometer was introduced on patent timepieces some time around 1810. Thermometers, which added to the cost of the clocks, were found on the finest examples that were appointed with superior glasses and giltwood frames. This clock fittingly has wonderfully reverse painted glasses and carved gilt rope frames. The glass in the base panel has desirable black painted ground around a detailed gilt foliate and blossom border, centering an elaborate polychrome depiction of a naval engagement. The view which shows several American and British war ships in open battle is titled at the base in gilt lettering "Battle on Lake Erie".
