A rare and important labeled antique Federal grandfather clock. The case by John Scudder, Westfield, New Jersey, circa 1795-1800.

 This attractive antique grandfather clock is an early labeled example from the accomplished cabinetmaker John Scudder [born 1773] from Westfield, New Jersey. Scudder is known for his high style Hepplewhite cases that incorporate fine proportions and intricate inlays. This early grandfather clock case is constructed of cherry and has a broken arch cornice with pinwheel disks framed with turned wood and inlaid finials. The dial is in excellent condition and features a moon phase disk painted with a ship at sail. The pendulum door has a shaped top with an inlaid oval at center and quarter fans at the bottom corners. The door opens to a nearly complete paper label that reads, “Made and Sold by / John Scudder / Cabinet-Maker / Westfield”. Although several labeled cases exist, this label is one the most complete examples known. The base panel is similarly inlaid with an oval and quarter fans at each corner. The base terminates with a double step molding and rests on ogee bracket feet. The case is in excellent condition and retains a pleasing old surface with a warm color.
