A very rare Federal mahogany five leg games table fitted with a writing desk and drawer, New York, circa 1810.

This nicely proportioned games tables possess some very rare features including a central drawer in the apron, a writing desk and storage wells. Federal games tables that are fitted with drawers are very rare but most cabinetmaker’s price books include the option as an “extra”. The fitment of a writing desk is exceedingly rare, but this desirable feature is documented in a small number of other examples. The tables has a line inlaid “D” shaped top with outset front and sides. The fly leaf opens to a hinged writing surface flanked by two quarter round storage wells. The surfaces have been trimmed with green baize. The fly leaf is supported by a swinging fifth leg at the rear. The conforming apron has a pattern inlaid edge and is set with a rectangular drawer. The line inlaid square tapered legs have banded cuffs and tops with light wood.
