A fine Federal inlaid mahogany tall clock, Southern, New Jersey, circa 1815.
This attractive Federal mahogany tall clock features the dramatic contrasting inlays found on the finest cases produced in Southern New Jersey during the first quarter of the 19th Century. The case is constructed of boldly grained mahogany and retains a mellow color with a pleasing surface.
The hood has a delicately scrolled and molded swan’s neck pediment terminating with applied disks centering a brass, ball and phoenix-form finial. This crest is also mounted at each side with ball and spire finials. The finials rest above rectangular inlaid panels which emulate vertical plinths or chimneys. These plinths flank an inlaid tympanum with two vibrant mahogany panels set with inlaid ovals. The tympanum transitions to the dial door with a molded perimeter. This cross-banded door is flanked with reeded colonnettes with brass capitals and bases. The dial door opens to a wonderfully painted American dial in original condition, with even crazing.
This dial features a moon phase disk, decorated with hand painted scenes. On one side of the moon disk is a detailed shoreline landscape scene with a cottage. The opposite image depicts a patriotic scene of a Naval ship flying an American flag. At the base of the lunette are two hemispheres, each decorated with terrestrial map transfers. The dial is framed with vibrant gilt scroll spandrels with bunches of fruit. A calendar aperture is located below the center arbor. The brass movement, which has recently been serviced, is in good running order and is of an eight-day duration. The movement is fitted with an original steel shaft pendulum with a brass capped lead bob and a pair of cast iron weights. The movement rests on a wooden “saddle board” and is original to the clock.
The hood transitions into the waist section with a flared throat molding. The waist is flanked with reeded quarter columns. The case is highly decorated with multiple inlaid elements. The pendulum door has vibrant oval center with quartered cross banding and an inlaid border. A small rectangular panel below repeats this motif. A flared molding transitions to the square base panel, which repeats the inlaid motif around a circular, figured mahogany central panel. The base of the clock has a double lobbed apron and French feet.
