A fine Chippendale mahogany block-front slant lid desk, Boston, circa 1760.

This attractive block front desk is a prime example of the formal Chippendale furniture being produced in mid-18th Century Boston. The desk possesses the bold proportions, high quality materials and first-rate construction common to these superior examples. The desk is constructed of extremely dense figured mahogany with a pleasing surface. The lid opens to reveal a writing surface with an elaborately stepped and fitted interior. The locking lid rest on a pair of matching lopers. The interior is comprised of matching banks of three short blocked and fan carved drawers, flanking a pair of cubbies set with valence-form blocked front drawers and a shaped partitions over a single blocked drawer. The upper group of drawers sit atop a molded shelf with a conforming blocked edge above two short drawers and one long central drawer.
These fittings center a blocked and fan carved prospect door flanked by fluted pilasters. The entire center section, including the prospect door can be removed by releasing a concealed locking mechanism. This hidden compartment is fitted with a pair of letter drawers behind the pilasters and a three small valuables drawer at the base. These complex hidden compartments are highly desirable features found on the finest desks. They reflect the skill and ingenuity of the cabinetmaker.
The desk is above a case of four graduated drawers that are fitted with bold Chippendale “pine tree” brasses and escutcheons. The drawer fronts have pronounced blocking including rounded convex tops on the outer blocking and a corresponding concave central blocking. The drawer dividers have a bead molded edge. The case transitions to a conforming stepped molded skirt that joins a set of boldly proportioned bracket feet. These blocked feet have shaped returns flanking a simple drop pendant at the mid apron.
