An Excellent Chippendale Walnut Bachelors Chest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1770.

This diminutive chest possesses the proportions and features of the best Philadelphia Chippendale chest but in a compact form. This small size with a dressing slide that can be used for writing or laying out clothing, designates this piece as a bachelor’s chest. A handy form that is ideal for the bedroom is equally convenient as a side table in public areas. The chest has a pleasing color, vibrant walnut and bold brasses.
The rectangular top has a molded edge with notched front corners. The top is above four graduated drawers with thumbnail molded edges and a sliding shelf. Each drawer is fitted with original period Chippendale brass pulls and escutcheons and the shelf has axe head drop pulls. The sides of the case are flanked with fluted and turned quarter columns. The case rests on a conforming molded apron and four ogee bracket feet with shaped knee returns.
