A very fine Classical Mahogany lyre-base work table, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York City, circa 1815.

This Classical mahogany work stand with astragal ends is an iconic and versatile form that is commonly associated with the cabinet shop of Duncan Phyfe [1770-1854]. The superb mahogany, precise cabinetwork and specifics of the design, readily identify this as a prime example of his work. The astragal-shaped work table appears in a variety of configurations and this example features a highly desirable double lyre base. These popular tables are celebrated for their usefulness and grace and this is a superlative example of the form.
The table retains a wonderful historic surface with mellow, rich color and even patina. The hinged top is constructed of fantastically grained dense mahogany, which has a molded edge. The top opens to a hinged writing surface that is flanked by two fitted compartments in the “D” shaped sides. Each compartment has two removable shaped trays and one includes fittings for writing utensils.
The conforming case has a band of vivid ribbon mahogany veneer above a neatly formed tambour midsection. The boxed central portion has finely veneered vertical pilasters flanking a large central drawer. The drawer has two brass pulls above a false tambour panel. The interior of the drawer is fitted with a single removable tray. Both the top and drawer are fitted with locks.
The work stand rests on an elaborate carved mahogany double lyre-form base. The full form lyre at the front of the case is foliate carved with floral medallions and is set with brass lyre strings. The lyre devices join a central block, which has a brass molded top above a figured mahogany frieze. Four saber legs join this block. The legs have acanthus leaf tops and carved paw feet on brass castors. This fashionable double lyre base is seen on the highest style pieces, like games tables and dining tables. The inclusion of this premium detail on a work stand would have been a special order for a discerning client.
