A fine Queen Anne mahogany antique candlestand with oval-top and drawer Newburyport, Massachusetts, circa 1780.

This tastefully proportioned antique candlestand features a richly grained oval top constructed from choice ribbon mahogany. The top of this antique candlestand has an alternating chevron inlaid edge with multi-colored banding and an oval bird’s-eye maple panel at center. The top pivots on two mahogany batons which are secured to a oversized block that is fitted with the very desirable feature of a single small drawer. This rests on a turned shaft with a central vase device, embellished with a chip carved decorative band. The post rests on tripod base with short cabriole legs on delicate slipper feet. Slipper feet such as these, with a sharp ridge at the top and pinched sides on a shaped pad, are commonly associated with the shop of Newburyport cabinetmaker Joseph Short. The top has an old color with a bright surface and the base retains a dark historic surface.
