An impressive antique Chippendale mahogany grandfather clock, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1790.
This Chippendale grandfather tall case clock is constructed of vividly grained mahogany. The excellent quality of the mahogany and terrific proportions identify this as a superior Philadelphia tall clock. The impressive broken arch pediment is above a prominent stepped cove molding. The hand painted dial features a detailed moon phase disk. The disk is decorated with an image of a sailing ship on one side and a rural landscape with a cottage on the opposite side. The columns on the hood and waist of the case have elaborate cast Corinthian capitals. The paneled base rests on ogee bracket feet.
