Detailed Photographs

An important Hepplewhite tall case clock, by James Doull, Charlestown, Massachusetts. The case attributed to the school of Thomas Seymour, Boston, circa 1815-20.

This impressive antique tall clock case is an unusually late example of the high style cases produced a few years earlier in Boston. It houses a wonderful over-sized dial of Boston origins in fine original condition. The impressive size, refined proportions, superb wood selections, inlay patterns and case style are closely related to the cases produced in the cabinet shop of Thomas Seymour. This case appears to be the work of a craftsman familiar with the shop practices of the Seymour’s and may be the work of one of his apprentices. Nearly every tall clock produced by James Doull with an over-sized dial is housed in a case produced by the Seymour cabinet shops. This antique tall clock has numerous attributes typical to Seymour’s work, yet it exhibits many nuances indicative of the later date of manufacture. The unique gallery type fretwork is clear example of this trend. This particular layout mimics the gallery crests found on the secretary desks produced by Seymour during this period, please see attached. The wonderful qualities and condition of this case are augmented by the fine local dial, which was produced for this prominent Boston clockmaker, successfully establishing this as a premier example among Boston tall clocks.
