This handsome chair is an important example of the fine roundabout chair that were produced in New York during the mid-18th Century. The chair is constructed of high quality walnut and exhibits an exuberance in the shaping of the arm supports, seat rail and four cabriole legs each with a ball and claw feet. The sophistication of the forms achieve a sculptural appearance, which elevates the importance of this handsome chair
Sometimes referred to as a corner chair, they are generally considered to be a gentleman’s chair. The form is associated with the activities performed at a desk, such as reading and writing. The seat enables one to change position and move without turning the chair. 
The chair has a pronounced bolster-form crest above a scrolled arm. The conforming arm rest has reverse scroll hand holds. The arm is supported by three serpentine form stiles centering a pair of vase form splats. The supports join a slip seat with dramatically serpentine shape front rails. Each of the four cabriole legs have shaped knee returns and sturdy ball and claw feet.
