An excellent Federal mahogany Massachusetts Shelf Clock, by Daniel Munroe & Company, Concord, Massachusetts, 1798-1804.

This attractive clock is a successful form referred to as a “Massachusetts shelf clock”, which was popularized in coastal Massachusetts during the late 18th Century. The form was produced by a number of clockmakers throughout the region. This example was produced by Daniel Munroe & Co., of Concord, Massachusetts. This partnership consisted of the three Munroe brothers; clockmakers Daniel and Nathaniel and cabinetmaker William. This partnership, situated in Concord, Massachusetts, lasted for six years from 1798-1804, a fact that helps provide a clear date of manufacture. The dial is framed with a gilt border and is fitted with original “beetle and poker” form hands. Below the dial face is a gilt scrolled cartouche which is signed with the maker’s name at center in flowing calligraphy, “D. Munroe & Co.” The clock has a brass eight day movement that is in good running order and retains an original lead weight and pendulum with steel rod and brass capped bob.
