This highly important antique banjo clock is among the first generation of these patent time pieces or banjo clock produced by the innovative clockmaker Simon Willard [1753-1848] of Roxbury, Massachusetts. Examples like this, with cross-banded frames and understated geometric eglomisé panels, were made in the shops of Simon Willard during the first years of his patent, after 1802. This case has mahogany and figured maple cross-banded frames around classical white and pink glasses with gilt foliate borders. The throat glass is decorated with gilt crosshatching and the lower tablet is signed "S. Willard's Patent". The glasses are all original without any flaws. The case, which retains a fine surface and patina, has a rare gilt and carved presentation bracket. The brass eight-day movement is constructed with through-bolts and a dead beat escapement with a "T" bridge.
