David Wood Shelf Clock (Newburyport, Mass.)
David Wood Shelf Clock (Newburyport, Mass.)
This impressive antique Massachusetts shelf clock with brightly contrasting inlays and a finely painted dial is a superlative example of this rare and desirable form by the clockmaker David Wood (1766-1855). This versatile and prolific maker from Newburyport, produced numerous tall case clocks, patent timepieces and most notably these attractive shelf clocks. He produced a variety of shelf clocks in forms that evolved over time with the prevailing fashions. The culmination of these efforts is this specific high style Hepplewhite case with a radiant fan crest, complex inlays and a skillfully decorated dial. This dial is decorated with a unique patriotic image of the period, an obscure naval engagement from the War of 1812, between the Hornet and Penguin. The exclusive rarity of this image combined with the superior qualities of the case, define this antique Mass. shelf clock as the supreme example of this prized clockmakers work.
