Queen Anne corner chair (Newport, RI)
This early Queen Anne round-about chair was produced in the Newport area, possibly in nearby Kingston, Rhode Island. The chair has a dramatic form and retains early transitional forms that date it to circa 1740-50. The front leg and serpentine seat frame are clearly Queen Anne forms, but the other three legs have block and vase turnings which are characteristic of the William and Mary styles. The chair has a bold successful form with a graceful Rhode Island serpentine seat rail and understated cabriole leg with a slipper foot. The curved arm-rail has a raised bolster above vase form spats. The legs are joined by blocked and turned stretcher.
