This fine set of period antique dining chairs survives in excellent original condition and retains a very desirable pair of armchairs. It is exceedingly rare for a set of [16] antique dining chairs to survive at all, let alone in superb condition. The chairs are constructed of high quality, dense mahogany throughout and retain a pleasing old surface. These handsomely proportioned chairs have an attractive and tastefully understated form with a gentle curve to the back legs. All the chairs have molded “thumb-back” stiles centering a rectangular panel above a pierced splat. The stiles and panels have raised bead moldings. The pair of armchairs have graceful reverse scrolled arm with ring and vase turned supports. The trapezoidal seats have slip frames and rest on turned and tapered front legs with reeded shafts. The front legs join the swept back rear legs with rectangular cross stretchers. The form and quality of the antique dining chairs is very robust and each chair remains in a very sturdy state. Aside from the mid-50’s upholstery these chairs are ready for immediate use. The chairs are in excellent condition with typical expected wear and corresponding repairs. The antique dining chairs have a mellow surface that has a warm patina. Three of the seat frames are replaced, of which two are period replacements.
