Chippendale shell carved desk (Colchester, CT)
A rare Chippendale block and shell carved mahogany desk, in the manner of the Colchester Connecticut, circa 1780.
This impressive desk has bold proportions and disctinctive blocked shells that tie it to the cabinetmakers of the Colchester region of Connecticut. The heavy mahogany slant front has three large, blocked shells, the center is inverted. This lid opens to a nicely fitted interior with symmetrical drawers and cubbies with a center prospect door flanked by bulbous columns. The case of four drawers is blocked to match the lid and is fitted with terrific fire gilt rococo brass pulls. The case rests on study bracket feet with curled and molded returns.
