This Chippendale antique serpentine chest of drawers features excellent proportions and richly grained mahogany with a pleasing old surface. The shaped and molded overhanging top has rounded corners and serpentine form front and sides. The top rests on a case with a serpentine front fitted with four graduated drawers. The drawers have molded edges and original brass bail-form pulls with oval lock escutcheons. A conforming molded skirt joins the four carved ogee bracket feet. The form of the feet is typical of Salem chests, with a tall foot and shaped returns, resting on a squared cuff. In addition to the feet the distinctive shaped top is also consistent with documented Salem chests.
