Townsend Chest-on-chest (Newport, Rhode Island)
This handsome chest-on-chest is an example of the fine furniture being produced in Newport, Rhode Island during the 18th Century. The piece is constructed of vivid tiger maple and exhibits both pleasing proportions and superior construction techniques. The construction and proportions of the piece relate closely to documented examples that are attributed to the Townsend cabinet shops. The diminutive size and pleasing proportions of the bonnet in relationship to the case, distinguish this as one of the most successful and attractive examples of this important form. The chest-on-chest survives in wonderful condition and retains a warm color and pleasing patina. The bonnet top of the upper case has a broken arch pediment with circular cut-outs and a broad cove molding centering a raised central plinth. The plinth is set with a carved and turned finial with a fluted band below a flame twist top. The enclosed bonnet top has thin pine boards that enclose the sides of the scrolls. The interior of the bonnet has an 19th Century cabinetmakers repair label. The face of the tympanum has conforming raised and molded panels constructed of richly grained tiger maple. The period Chippendale brass drawer hardware and lock escutcheons are appropriate replacements. The bottom of the lower case has a broad stepped molding that joins distinctive Newport ogee bracket feet.
