This very attractive antique tall case clock is a superb example of a late “Roxbury” style case that were produced in Boston around 1815-20. The form maintains its superior proportions and quality, but the emphasis has shifted from contrasting inlays and brass adornments to the exuberant use of highly figured mahogany. This grandfather clock was produced by the important clockmaker Aaron Willard [1757-1844], brother to the renowned clockmaker Simon Willard. The dial features a rare hand-painted polychrome scene of a hound chasing a fox through a country landscape with a cottage and mountains in the background. The dial is framed with four corner spandrels decorated with vibrant multi-colored draperies and medallions. This spandrel pattern is very rare and remains in superior condition. The dial is signed in flowing calligraphy below the center arbor with the maker’s name and locale “Aaron Willard / BOSTON”. The pendulum door has a cross-banded rosewood border around a richly figured mahogany panel. The base has a similar panel to the door, with rosewood cross-banding border around a highly figured mahogany panel. The base of the panel has a inlaid edge that joins a lobed skirt and flared French feet with shaped returns.
