Aaron Willard Tall Clock (Boston, Mass.)
Aaron Willard Tall Clock (Boston, Mass.)
The case of this attractive antique tall clock made by Aaron Willard is among the finest produced in all of Boston. It houses a superlative over-sized dial with a richly painted lunette portraying a detailed landscape with manor house and figures. These over-sized dials were made in Boston and this remarkable example is among an elite handful to be so exquisitely decorated. Dials of this type are typically housed in premium clock cases produced by the best cabinetmakers of Boston. The impressive size, refined proportions, superb wood selections along with specific construction details, indicate that the case was produced in the cabinet shop of John & Thomas Seymour. This is further confirmed by the distinctive delicate scrolling fretwork which is found on several similar cases, including a very similar signed example, found in the Oval office in the White House collection.{note the reduced feet} The superior form and condition of this case, together with an extraordinary dial produced for this prominent Boston clockmaker, successfully establishing this as a premier example of a Willard Grandfather clock.
