Nathaniel Dominy Tall Clock (East Hampton, Long Island)
A very rare provincial antique tall case clock by Nathaniel Dominy, East Hampton, Long Island, New York, circa 1780.
This distinctive antique tall case clock is a form associated with the Dominy family of clock makers who were producing tall clocks at the eastern end of Long Island for several generations, from about 1770 to 1830. This tall clock is attributed to the maker Captain Nathaniel Dominy IV, 1737-1812. Not only was he a whaling captain, but he was producing both his own clock movements and cases, which is a very uncommon practice. The simple case has a raised pagoda top above an arch molding and tombstone dial door. The door opens to an engraved sheet brass dial and a thirty hour movement. The dial is signed in flowing calligraphy within the arch "N. Dominy E. hampton". The case has an uncomplicated form with a molded waist and rectangular base.
