Simon Willard Tall Clock (Roxbury, Mass.)
Simon Willard Tall Clock (Roxbury, Mass.)
This wonderfully executed diminutive antique tall case clock is a miniaturized version of the formal “Roxbury” style cases that were popular in Boston during the late 18th century. The clock is fitted with a rare eleven inch dial which enables the case to maintain the proportions of a full sized case at a mere six feet, seven inches. This is the smallest example of any Roxbury case clock. This example was made and inscribed for Mr. John Thwing, 1795. John Thwing (1732-1811) lived just outside of Boston in the Fresh Pond area of Newton, Massachusetts. The clock descended through this family until it was recently purchased out of an important Nantucket, Main Street home. A Simon Willard tall clock in a fine Roxbury case is considered, by sophisticated collectors, to be among the most highly prized furniture forms. Bespoke examples such as this, were specifically produced for individuals of sufficient means, and are the rarest of this desirable form. In addition to a dial inscribed with the first owner’s name, this is the only known example of a Simon Willard tall case clock fitted with an eleven inch dial. Other small cases exist, but these examples are fitted with a disproportionate full sized dial and therefore do not maintain the pleasing proportions of a full sized Roxbury case. This clock is an extremely rare and successful variation produced by Boston’s best clockmaker and represents one of the masterpieces of American clock making.
