This attractive antique work table is constructed of first quality mahogany and possesses carvings that are closely associated with the work of Samuel F. McIntire. The richly figured rectangular mahogany top has a half-round molded edge and outset ovolo corners with disk-form rosettes. This top is above a bank of two locking drawers with brass pulls and cock-bead surrounds. The drawer fronts and each of the case sides are set with vibrantly figured crotch-grain mahogany panels. The table has four fully carved, turned and reeded legs. The top portion of each leg is finely carved with a pineapple, depicted as a whole plant, complete with a foliate base. The background of this portion has a star punched field, which is typical of fine Salem carved furniture. The pineapple, which was a popular motif in the federal era, was a visual keystone of the feast and had come to express the sense of welcome, good cheer and abundance. The leg continues to boldly carved acanthus leaves, layered to form a bell shaped collar. The shaft of the leg has a reeded and tapered portion that continues to pronounced ring turnings and terminates in a ball form foot.
