A wonderfully proportioned worktable with a fitted top drawer and an upholstered wood-frame work bag. The spiral carved wood pulls on each drawer are a particularly fine detail. This elegant table is attributed to celebrated Salem cabinetmaker William Hook (1777-1867). The top is bordered with a carved “reel” molding which is a signature motif associated with shop of William HooK. An assortment of document pieces by him employ such moldings.
The rectangular top has a finely figured mahogany panel with outset corners and applied turned disks. The case has a fitted top drawer above a wing bag with a wood frame and pleated upholstery. The table has extremely delicate ring turned and tapered legs with reed shafts.
This piece has an Israel Sack provenance and is illustrated in “American Antiques in the Israel Sack Collection” Volume IV #P3781.
